PAGADIAN CITY,
Zamboanga del Sur, May 14 (PNA) -- The National Food Authority (NFA) here has
assured they have sufficient buffer stocks of rice to supply the needs of the
people in cases of emergency or calamity in this province.

Manager Nieves Toca said Wednesday the buffer stocks they have could last for
nine days based on this province’ daily consumption of 5,080 bags of 50 kilos
each.
Toca said they also
have 50,802 bags of palay, 5,085 bags of locally-produced rice and 9,260 bags
of imported rice aside from the buffer stocks.
Toca said the
inventory of the NFA is being complemented by the local rice farmers, who have
already started harvesting their produce.
She noted that this
province comprising of one city and 26 towns usually have surplus stocks since
it serves as the rice granary of the region.
Bureau of
Agricultural Statistics data showed that this province has 72,365 hectares of
land planted to rice.
Meanwhile, Toca said
the functions and service of the NFA remains even though the agency has been
placed under the Food Security and Agricultural Modernization of the Office of
